TOUGHER rules for young Tasmanian drivers kick in today, Infrastructure Minister Graeme Sturges says.
"The first phase will reinforce good driving practices and compliance with road rules by rewarding offence-free driving during the provisional period and imposing additional penalties for illegal and unsafe driving behaviour," Mr Sturges said.
Provisional drivers who do not break road rules on the way to their full licence will get a refund of their provisional licence fees. Those who do will be penalised.
"This means that learners may find themselves ineligible to drive for a period of time and provisional drivers may find themselves forced back to a learner's licence with the requirement to re-sit driving tests to regain their provisional licence," he said.
Phase 2, to begin in April next year, would include holding a learner licence for 12 instead of six months.
The Liberals said the reforms were long overdue.
