FILM archivists want to hear from Tasmanians who recognise the people and places depicted in a documentary about Hobart life in the 1960s.

The National Film And Sound Archive has released the film on YouTube as part of its Life in Australia series and is keen for feedback from the public.

The 20 minute piece, made by the Commonwealth Film Unit in 1966, provides a fascinating glimpse of how life was in Hobart half a century ago.

It begins by following a postman on his daily rounds and covers several landmarks including the Royal Hobart Hospital, zinc works, Cadbury chocolate factory and Mount Wellington.

Other less instantly-recognisable places that the NFSA may need help identifying include classrooms, residential streets, factories, a bar and poolroom.

Anyone with information about the people and places shown in the film are encouraged to place comments on the YouTube site.

Already over 5000 people have viewed the video and it has provoked a joyous response from many Tasmanian viewers.

"Wonderful childhood memories, especially Cat and Fiddle Arcade as it used to be!" one viewer wrote.

Another said: "If filmed in 1966 I was only five but can remember the Zinc Works, Cadbury's, Cat and Fiddle, Swimming lessons at Wrest Point in the sea pool before the Casiono was built........ahhh those were the days."
