Southern cities top house sales

THE south of the state dominated house sales in the past financial year, new data shows.

In the past financial year 1493 homes were sold in the Launceston municipality, more than double the number in Hobart, which totalled 635.

But RP Data research director Tim Lawless said the difference was simply a reflection of the Launceston municipality's larger size than Hobart.

When figures for Greater Hobart are included Launceston continues to be outgunned, with 802 homes sold in Clarence and 724 in Glenorchy.

Hobart retains the upper hand on prices, with a median price of $405,000 compared with Launceston's $240,000.

This was also behind Glenorchy at $250,000 and Clarence at $314,750.

Burnie had 496 sales at a median price of $207,000.

However, the value of houses in Launceston has risen faster than Hobart in the past five years, up 8.6 per cent compared with 5.5 per cent for Hobart.

Burnie was a stand-out with an 11.5 per cent median price rise, followed by Glenorchy up 9.3 per cent and Clarence at 8.4 per cent.

Over 10 years median price increases were 12.7 per cent for Glenorchy, Hobart 12.2, Burnie 11.5, Launceston and Clarence both 11.2.
