THE new-look Taste Festival has been deemed a success with big crowds moving freely through the improved site.

More then 30,000 people went through the gates yesterday to find more seating and a layout changed for the better.

Festival producer Ros Abercrombie said there had been a steady stream of visitors throughout the day.

"Our expectations have definitely been exceeded," Ms Abercrombie said.

"The extra gate and different entrances improved the flow of human traffic.

"We had a really good first day, and have had great responses to the changes."

Stallholders agreed the new layout was a success.

Wursthaus owner Peter Trioli said he had had good feedback.

"I've been busy working but what I've seen looks pretty good. The customers seemed pleased and commented about there being more space to walk around," Mr Trioli said.

Andre Richardson from Island Berries Tasmania said at first he had been concerned about the changes but later saw they were effective.

"Entering the building from the side entrances only has definitely helped the flow of people," Mr Richardson said.

"The increase in seating was definitely needed.

"I have been here for 10 years and I think it's important the Taste continues to evolve to keep people coming back."

The annual Hartz Race to the Taste from the Domain opened the dynamic festival.

The event drew 330 competitors, proving sport and culture are a popular mix.

Local runner Jason Allie won for the second time, running the 6km in 18 minutes and 20 seconds.

"Now I'm looking forward to a raspberry ice-cream," Allie said.

Beijing Olympian Donna MacFarlane won the women's event in her first attempt.

"This time of year I'm normally at the carnivals in Devonport," MacFarlane said.

"It's great to be home at this time of year to enjoy all the waterfront has to offer."

Hobart City Council festivals and tourism special committee chairman Marti Zucco said this year was set to be the biggest and best yet.

"The event is still about Tasmanian food and wine, but we are entering a new era in our 20th year," Ald Zucco said.

"We hope the wind disappears."

He said the Taste this year had more than 55 gourmet food and wine stalls.

"The new Taste Festival also includes fantastic new line-ups of Australian musicians and performers," Ald Zucco said.

"It is a much broader concept, with sporting events, arts, music and food."
