AS dawn breaks over the rugged mountains around Tarin Kowt this morning, three Anzacs will pause to remember their best mate.
Cpl Mathew Hopkins' name was etched in the nation's honour roll after he died in a Taliban ambush on March 16.
The Brisbane boy, 21, was mentoring comrades in the Afghan National Army when he paid the ultimate sacrifice, the Herald Sun reports.
He died just three days before bomb disposal expert Sgt Brett Till became Australia's 10th fatality in Afghanistan.
At today's dawn service, in a barren, eerily beautiful Afghan valley far from home, "Hoppy" Hopkins' three closest mates will remember the good times with their lost comrade.
And they will spare a thought for the families of others who have fallen: Andrew Russell, 33, Luke Worsley, 26, David Pearce, 41, Jason Marks, 27, Matthew Locke, 33, Sean McCarthy, 25, Michael Fussell, 25, and Gregory Sher, 30. |
