TASMANIA'S unemployment rate blew out to a nation-high 7 per cent in February, the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows.

The 0.4 per cent increase came as clouds hung over further jobs at the BHP TEMCO and Rio Tinto plants at Bell Bay and amid public service job shedding and the forestry industry's collapse.

The rate is the highest since September 2003 and comes at a time when full-time employment has fallen to 64 per cent of total employment.

The national unemployment rate climbed marginally to 5.2 per cent.

Unions and the state Liberals formed an unusual coalition when they came out swinging.

Unions Tasmania state secretary Kevin Harkins said it was clear the Government's slash and burn strategy was not working.

"Workers are finding themselves out of work as a result of the service cuts," he said.

"They discover that full-time jobs are disappearing and are being replaced with part-time, insecure work.

"The flow-on effect to retail and other sectors is obvious, spending stops and the economy slows."

He said the Government needed to do something to stimulate the economy.

Liberal Treasury spokesman Peter Gutwein said that since Lara Giddings became premier, 2800 jobs had disappeared. "In the last month alone, 300 jobs vanished pushing unemployment up to a staggering 7 per cent," he said.

"These job losses are inevitable when you have a Green-Labor Government that is slashing frontline services and shutting down the forestry industry."

The Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the rise in male unemployment was alarming and a challenge for the community.

"The 7.6 per cent unemployment rate for males compares with 4.6 per cent in February 2009," chief economist Mark Bowles said.

"In terms of industry trends the job losses are in blue collar jobs manufacturing, forestry and construction.

"Jobs in those sectors can be less easily transferred into other settings compared with females who tend to be in the education or health sector."

the laying off of people in retail and wholesale sectors after Christmas was responsible for the large jump in unemployed in January and February.
