Internet access
All rooms are serviced with either wired or wireless network access. Some locations may provide both wired and wireless options.
Access to UTAS sites and networks are available free of charge and without restriction. External internet access is supplied via BigAir.

So I guess what you've said is right, the free service is "Intranet - UTAS sites and networks" and student need to pay a fee for "Internet" for 'external (linking to www) internet access'.

Maybe a mobile data plan is better for me for access on the go, so as to thether to the computer via wireless hotspot.
I'll take your advise to go with Telstra network (for voice and mobile data plan), what are the providers available under this network (i.e Lycamobile)?

Lycamobile has no data plan and mobile data is very expensive here.  This page shows Teltra's rate on monthly plans: http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/data-packs/

I reckon you are better off sticking to BigAir or use free internet access in the library. The library is only 5 minutes walk from the AMC accommodation.

Awww, yes they are expensive! I have to be very careful on my spending =)
Sure, I'll check that (BigAir) out.. or I'll stick to the library ^^..

If I'm not mistaken, a new student will only receive their ID/password for accessing the library during the orientation week. Is there any alternatives in the mean time, the cheap ones? I'll arrive about 5 days in advance.

Sorry, I don't know about internet usage as a visitor in the library.  Ask the librarians when you get there.  All/most public libraries in Australia offer free internet access. You may book a session (normally 1 hour) there.

It is nice to meet a motivated youngster like you.  When will you come to Launceston?  I live in Launceston too and I probably will spend a fair bit of time on the Launceston campus in the next month or so.  If you have any questions or need help after arrival, just yell.

=) Woah, thanks a lot. That's very sweet of you!! I'm definitely in need of local advises. FYI, I'll arrive on 13th Feb 2013 (yupp, it's CNY still), I'll be more than happy to catch up with you if you have time!

I'll need some guidances on clothings and linens (i.e blankets) as almost everyone I met exclaimed with disbelieve when I said I'm going to Tasmania, and said it's FREEZING cold there, eventhough there's no snow.  ^^|||

I've browsed through the Testra's website, their plans are rather expensive as compared to Optus (Amaysim).. Lycamobile (Telstra) is cheaper, but I've read some reviews that their prices are fairly inconsistent.. T.T
Anyway, what's your personal favourite as what you'd recommend? I guess I'm quite moderate (or occasional) on call/texting per se.

We are now becoming penpals.  LOL.

Feb is summer and is pretty warm here. Depending on which province in China you are from, winter here is not too cold. Because it is not terribly cold here, house insulation and air conditioning in general is not very good.  That is probably why some Chinese here complain about the coldness. A down jacket for winter is good enough (I am from Hong Kong and I don't normally wear a down jacket in winter).  You'd better get a blanket or duvet 被子(Australians call it "doona") here. Australian airlines are very strict about excess baggage and the fine at the airport counter is hefty.  Make sure your luggage is well within limit. Electronics are expensive here.  You may want to save your luggage space for laptops, portable hard drives, cameras, etc.

Go for Lycamobile first.  As there is no contract, you can change to another service provider any time you want. Lycamobile's rates fluctuate but it is still very competitive, given that it offers the Telstra network.

I'm from Malaysia actually, and you can imagine how I'll be in winter. It's basically summer all year round, and now we are having the rainy season, but still hot when it's not rainning. The coldest I've experienced was around 14~16 degrees in Taipei, where we were all turned into penguins with the thickest clothes we brought along. LOL. Where can I get cheaper linen pack (bed sheet, pillow cover) and blanket/duvet when I first arrived? What do you think about electric blanket?

Sure, I'll be careful with what I pack into my luggage, as I have limit myself with 25kg baggage allowance plus another 10kg carry-on. Just bring the necessity..

I'll go for Lycamobile for a try then =)

um... you may find it cold here.  Winter won't come until July.  There is plenty of time to stock up for winter.
