A MINOR motorcycle collision ended in disaster for a rider yesterday when his Harley Davidson exploded in flames.

An eye-witness who was one of the first on the scene was Gary Myors, who co-incidentally is marketing manager for Motor Safe Tasmania.

"The rider changed lanes and clipped the back wheel of a motorcyclist riding with him. The bike tipped over and a small fire started. Obviously, hot fuel spilled on to the exhaust or something and the fire took off," Mr Myors said.

"It just goes to show how a minor collision can turn into something quite catastrophic."

Mr Myors, who is also motorcyle rider, said the Harley was a show bike probably worth $60,000.

"The bike's owner, a guy from Victoria, was uninjured but he would have been devastated about his bike."

Mr Myors said the fire happened on the Tasman Hwy just before the South Arm Hwy overpass -- the site of roadworks.

"It's living proof that when roadworks are on, riders and drivers need to keep vigilant and drive cautiously.

"While I was there, within half an hour I saw several people driving erratically.

"People need to slow down and act sensibly."
