Difficulties in learning English as a Chinese
- Language habits from Chinese language
- Pronounce every word individually with a flat intonation
- There are no consonants (辅音)at the end of Chinese words (except the consonant /n/)
- Believe that language is knowledge when it is actually skills
- Spend too much time learning grammar and vocabulary, without learning English itself
- Lack the mastery of simple but useful sentences, conversations and paragraphs
- make haste to read many books about English but have no proficiency with one textbook.
- Lack of interests and confidence in English
a. Many students are not interested in English though they would love to study aboard or immigrate to an English speaking country - Students are not interested in English and they demonstrate little confidence when conversing with native-speakers
Solutions for Chinese Students
- Unlearn Chinese and be aware of the language differences
- Compare the characteristic differences between Chinese and English
- Master the phonetic sounds (43 sounds) of English
- Always be aware of the attributes of English when speaking English (training & correction)
- Proficient skills come from drill, rehearsal and real-life practice
- Learn English from a well written textbook with native-speakers’ recording
- Listen to the recording many times and imitate exactly like how the native speakers talk
- Seek opportunities to speak to native speakers(or good non-native speakers) AND make sure they strictly correct your mistakes
- Keep practicing till you can feel that English is part of your soul (sub-consciousness)
- Fall in love with English
- Be curious about how English differs from Chinese with an appreciative attitude
- Poems? Stories? Movies? Songs? Celebrities? Or native speaker friends? Choose one category that inspires you most to fall in love with English
- Deliberately create/choose English environment so that you have more chance to be involved with English practice, such as English radio, podcasts, newspaper and novels.
