Tassie to miss Anzac holiday

TASMANIA will be the only state to miss out on an Anzac Day holiday next year.

The Legislative Council rejected the plan last night.

Every state had agreed to legislate to allow Australians a public holiday next year, when Anzac Day, April 25, falls on a Sunday.

The amendment would have given Tasmanians an extra public holiday every 11 years, when Anzac Day fell on a Sunday or Easter Monday.

This year Tasmania and several other states did not have a public holiday when Anzac Day fell on a Saturday.

MLC Doug Parkinson said Tasmanians were being denied a right other Australians would have.

"This amendment was proposed to make sure we celebrated Anzac Day with the rest of Australia, which is important symbolically and commercially," Mr Parkinson said.

"All other states and territories now have legislation in place that provides for a substitute or additional holiday when Anzac Day falls on a Sunday."

Now the act provides for a public holiday on April 25. When it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, no holiday is held on the following Monday.

The amendment was supported by Labor MLCs, Liberal Vanessa Goodwin and independent Paul Harriss.
